Vintage Silver Christmas Trees
If you are in the baby boomer generation then you will probably remember these Vintage Silver Christmas Trees. During the 1960s, the aluminum or Silver Christmas tree as most people called them, enjoyed its most popular period of usage. By the mid-1960s these trees began to fall out of favor, with many being thrown away or relegated to basements and attics. In 1965 the Charlie Brown Christmas Special was aired and has been credited with the ending of the era for the silver Christmas tree. By 1967 their time had almost completely passed. At the height of the tree’s popularity, they could be purchased from the Sears catalog.
You can still bring back some great memories of these silver tinsel Christmas trees. In recent years the aluminum Christmas tree has seen a re-emergence in popularity. Collectors began buying and selling the trees, especially on online auction web sites like eBay. Whether you decorate with blue or red balls . . . or use the tree without ornaments, a silver Christmas tree is sure to be the talk of your family and friends this holiday season. Don’t forget to use some Vintage Christmas Tree Ornaments for that little tinsel tree!
The Silver Christmas Tree, an icon of Space Age Kitsch
(from The Washington Post – December 2019)
The streets of downtown Manitowoc, Wis., are dressed in their holiday best. Lampposts are draped in greenery, and ornaments hang like sparkly earrings. All along Eighth Street, the windows of businesses like the Hearty Olive, Heart & Homestead, Heavy Pedal Bicycles and Susan’s Second Style sparkle with a seasonal symbol that’s near and dear to Manitowoc’s heart: the Evergleam aluminum Christmas tree.
This artificial tree, in shimmering colors of green and silver, pink and gold, is considered by some to be a work of Space Age art. It was created and manufactured 60 years ago by Aluminum Specialty Co., right here in Manitowoc, which sits on the shore of Lake Michigan about 80 miles north of Milwaukee. For those who want to party like it’s 1959, Evergleams on Eighth is a chance to peep in the windows of 30-plus businesses and see the many incarnations of the Jetsons-like tree, which launched a national craze when it hit stores.
